After hiking for six days in the Alps, near GAP, we slept overnight in our last cabin and stared up at the surrounding mountain from chairs. Watching the stars turn against the silhouette of the Mountains shows me, more than any other experience how the earth spins around and around, and since that time, I have thought about our moving space in that way. Always spinning.
Now, on the Summer Solstice of 2015, I sit and look out on 5 acres in Baltimore County, MD, and see the same stars between the silhouette of Tulip Poplars. The same stars spin against the dark night’s background. But in addition, are thousands of fireflies that move and cascade both down and up, from sky to ground, and ground to sky. It’s all so delicate. This light and movement. And so precious to have been there so see, and remember both.
